Covid 19 – Safety measures as at 10th June 2020

The following statement of intent outlines how jersey Adventures will be conducting it’s operations and practices following the ease of lockdown to level 2 of the current pandemic.

The Government of Jersey guidelines for level 2 can be found here https://www.gov.je/SiteCollectionDocuments/Health%20and%20wellbeing/P%20Level%202%20Safe%20Exit%20Framework%20Policy.pdf

During this current period, Jersey Adventures staff will wear protective gloves when handling equipment that is to be shared with customers, sanitise shared equipment before and after each use, encourage customers to bring their own and use hand sanitiser before and after each activity session. In some activities we will ask customers / participants to also wear protective gloves. Customers / participants have the choice of wearing their own personal mask during activity periods or when coming in to contact with our team and that of other participants.

We will encourage and persevere to maintain social distancing before, during and after activity periods and may exclude persons from further participation if they willingly refuse to co-operate.

We will use Evans Handsan 70% alcohol hand sanitiser, Evans Safe Zone Plus Virucidal disinfectant and paper towels or Dettol wipes for the cleaning of equipment in between user groups and individuals.  Milton sterilising fluid diluted with water will be used for rinsing any hired wet suits and buoyancy aids from Jersey Adventures stock.

As we operate an all Island service we do not own or lease any of the land being used and therefore will not be tape marking floors allocating 2 metre distancing measures and will conduct this verbally and visually. We will if necessary use marker cones and will carry these in one of our mobile units.

During some activities, should the safety of any participant become jeopardised through natural environmental or human behaviours, we will encourage self rescue techniques, which if cannot be performed successfully may require Jersey Adventures staff to break the distancing rules to rescue that or those individuals concerned.

Persons displaying signs of Corona Virus will be asked to separate from the group where we can arrange for their collection to go home and self isolate.

During group work with children up to the size of 40 persons, we will only work with groups where other adults / teachers are available to help supervise and encourage basic Covid guidelines, and would expect that where there may be conflicting or unclear guidance, to discuss with members of our team to overcome or eliminate the problem.

Where a participant / teacher / parent feels they may be compromised by participating in any particular activity they have the choice to “sit out” that activity, and where the parent feels there is a need to sit out an activity we ask that they provide a note. We do not force activity on those not wishing to participate.

The photography of Jersey Adventures staff conducting the business of the company is strictly forbidden without the express permission of John Fox, Managing Director.

The Government of Jersey guidelines state that participants should come ready dressed for activities and go home in the same clothing as they arrived to change. We understand the impracticality of travelling in wet suits and leave this at the discretion of the family concerned. There will be no changing rooms provided and public toilets are also not to be used for changing. We recommend using a towel Robie for this purpose.

The activities and what we are doing to conform with The Government of Jersey level 2 guidelines.

Abseiling

For abseiling, we ask that customers / participants bring their own gloves for protection against rope burns. We will provide a clean and fresh harness for each person abseiling and the karabinas attached to each harness will be sanitised after each sessional use. Jersey Adventures can supply gloves for this purpose which will be placed in to a laundry bin at the end of each session for washing.

Students will be verbally guided by a qualified Jersey Adventures team member on how to wear and fasten their helmets and harness, using tried and tested methods of checking and adjusting. Where and if this is proving difficult to a participant we will ask the permission of that person to fasten it for them whilst staying as socially distant as possible.

Due to distancing rules it will only be possible to abseil on the slipway at St Catherine’s for groups.

Participants will be shown by demonstration how to attach a rope using a karabina and fasten securely from a socially distant position.

The helmets will be sanitised using Virucidal disinfectant and paper wipes or Dettol wipes after each session.

Archery

Social distancing rules will apply and the area will be marked out using cones.

Bows and arrows will be sanitised after each sessional use to help with the prevention of cross contamination, participants will be required to self hand sanitise before and after each session. Also participants will be required to wear latex gloves during archery sessions, to be disposed of in a bin at the end of each session. Persons allergic to latex will be required to provide their own non-latex gloves.

Boogie boarding / sea swimming

There will be no changing facilities available so we would recommend that participants use their own towel robie for the purpose of changing or go home in their wet suit.

Social distancing will be applied as a rule but we appreciate in the excitement of the activity this may be difficult, therefore our staff in the water will be giving constant reminders verbally to abide by the two metre distancing rules. Due to the Covid rules surrounding touching equipment we encourage participants to bring their own boogie board and whilst we have a stock, they cannot be shared.

Coasteering

There will be no changing facilities available so we would recommend that participants either arrive in their wet suit or use their own towel robie for the purpose of changing and at the end of the day, or go home in their wet suit.

Social distancing will be applied as a rule but we appreciate in the excitement of the activity this may be difficult, therefore our staff in the water will be giving constant reminders verbally to abide by the two metre distancing rules. Where a participant is in difficulty in the water, we will verbally encourage self rescue, however if this is not possible we will break social distancing rules to rescue that person/s in difficulty.

Should participants use one of our stock wet suits, it will placed in laundry bucket for disinfecting by  a member of the Jersey Adventures team or for multi-booking users the participant can borrow the wet suit, taking responsibility for disinfecting and rinsing it themselves each day.

Buoyancy aids will be issued to participants for the duration of a day or by sessional basis and disinfected each day by the Jersey Adventures team.

Paddle sports (Kayaking and SUP boarding)

Paddles and carrying handles will be disinfected after each sessional use.

Paintball

Social distancing rules will apply and the safe zone of the arena will be marked out using cones. When entering the safe zone, participants will be numbered to a station which will remain as their station for the duration of the activity.

Participants must use hand sanitiser before and after each session.

Paintball guns will be placed on a numbered hanger at the end of each short game and participants will hang their gun for re-loading by the supervising instructor.

Guns and face masks will be disinfected after each sessional use.

Walking expeditions and foraging

Social distancing rules will apply and where points of interest are to be explained we will try to put these points across in a socially distant manner.

Enclosed spaces will be avoided and where enclosed spaces are scheduled such as the Wetlands Centre, we will apply the rules of the venue.
